Together in Art
Steven Miller (AGNSW)
Abstract: Like all Australian cultural institutions, the Art Gallery of New South Wales closed to the public for a number of months in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Yet in order to stay connected with audiences, using the exceptional power of art to nourish and uplift in uncertain times, the Gallery launched an online platform called Together in Art.
The aim was to ‘work with artists, performers, educators, and our community partners to create meaningful art encounters that offer daily inspiration…new commissions, pocket exhibitions, behind-the-scenes tours, soul-stirring performances, art classes with some of Australia’s great artists, deep dives into the riches of our collection.’
The Library and the Archive of the Gallery were an integral part of this initiative and found it to be a particularly rewarding one, offering many opportunities to re-present our collections online. We curated online exhibitions, wrote blogs, presented ‘what’s in the box’ video episodes, and commissioned four artists to create artists’ books responding to the times.
